Exercise Comprehension – Biomechanics 101

April 1, 2018 By admin

Human mechanics is a big time interest for Twice as Fit. Movement observation allows the exercise professional to understand what muscles and joints are doing during movement. If we understand what muscles and joints are doing during exercise, we can create specific exercise programs designed for our client’s goals. Our education has been focused on Human Mechanics so we know exactly what the body needs to do during exercise/sport/ADL’s.

If Mike wants to work on Golf, we have to understand what goes into the golf swing, how mike is currently swinging a golf club, and do the two different swings match up. Through movement observation, we focus on the strengths of his swing, and also the weaknesses in his swing. Building upon Mike’s good mechanics, we feather in exercises that help with his weaknesses, which helps bridge the gap between his strengths and weaknesses. A weakness becoming a strength helps propel our strengths and our golf game!

We want to bring Functional Movement to a Group Exercise setting so we can keep impacting our clients’ in a profound manner. Variability – What Helps Strength?

October 16, 2017 By admin

Dr. Abby Kramer utilizing position and weight to challenge her body

As Movement Professionals, we are constantly asked to help clients get stronger. What does that mean? What does strength look like? As we train the elderly population, being able to get out of bed or a chair is considered strength. As we coach a young elite athlete, strength is being able to run the 40 Meter dash in under 5 seconds. Context is king! But how do we increase strength and power?

Historically the variable we have considered as the end all is weight. If we increase a load, we increase strength. In some cases, this is definitely true. A few questions and comments to consider.

The lion is one of the strongest animals in nature. We have yet to find someone who wants to wrestle a lion, and if they did, well we would consider them a little crazy. Aside from tackling and dragging prey, when does a lion lift a heavy weight? Maybe when it is rough housing with its’ friends a bit, but when else? The point we are driving home here is that weight is important, but it isn’t the only means to get stronger.

A few exercise variables to consider to help strength:

  1. Plane of Motion – We have found people can be very strong in a specific plane of motion – forward and backward, side to side, etc. They can also be very weak in another plane of motion
  2. Speed  – As said by one of my favorite wellness professionals, Dr. Perry Nickelston – we can only go as fast as we can slow ourselves down. Focus on changing the speed of a motion. Sometimes, an individual moves very well going fast, but loses control going slow. Moving slow helps expose weakness and compensation in the body
  3. Position – When was the last time you were on the ground during exercise? Or better yet, kneeling? Changing position of the body helps us blow past plateaus. Upright, Kneeling, and sitting are just a few variations of position
  4. Driver – What is moving our body? Where is our motion starting? Does my foot start my motion or does my hand? Both? Leading movement with various parts of our body helps change an exercise COMPLETELY. Anything in our body can be a driver.

We are constantly challenging our clientele to ‘get out of their way’ and experience things a little differently. A lot of the time, we have noticed that we just have to modify exercise a little bit to see huge, measurable results.

Learning – A Lifelong Journey

October 2, 2017 By admin

Dr. Gary Gray and the Gang!

September was a month of continued learning for Twice as Fit! We had some great opportunities to meet some educators who have been making a difference in the world of Health and Movement. We are, first and foremost, grateful for these opportunities. Our overall learning helps us help you, with the hopes that we can make a global impact.

We didn’t learn anything that was necessarily new or innovative. Rather, we have been reinforcing our life and movement principles with multiple and different perspectives. We can all look at the same thing, but have totally different interpretations. The more we have an understanding of these interpretations, the more tools we have in our toolbox to help others. If you are a carpenter, and you use a hammer a lot, try using a saw or even a sledgehammer. These tools work great, exploring applications and techniques can create a whole new way of thinking.

Using our tools in our tool belt is a recipe we love using to continue our understanding of the human body and how we are able to move more effectively. These skills will help us to enjoy the activities that make us who we are!

Education Explorers: Upcoming Curriculum

August 15, 2017 By admin

Movin’ n Groovin’

As Education Explorers, Twice as Fit is excited for the month of September. Every year, we make it a point to continue our education in order to better serve you as well as ourselves. The Health and Wellness field is growing every day, and we plan to be at the forefront of all the fun and engaging information.

The second weekend, Twice as Fit kicks it off at McCormick place, checking out a digital media and marketing event, Print 2017. This is a first for us, so it will be interesting to learn something new. We like learning and understanding multiple platforms, not just Health and Wellness. Growth and ideas can come from overlooked places!

The Doctor Mash up will be the next weekend, where Dr. Perry Nickelston and Dr. Mark Cheng host a movement seminar at Spindle Fitness. Perry is a renown Chiropractor who has a fun and interactive way of teaching. The main focus is the Brain and body, featuring ‘neuro hacks’.

Chain Reactions will  be the following week, which will be the second year for Twice as Fit. Last year, Chain Reactions influenced and challenged Twice as Fit in the best way. Gary and Doug Gray are true professionals and present in a positive, uplifting manner.

All of these educational experiences help us better serve our clientele, ourselves, and our bigger picture. Stay tuned for more updates!
